1 River Place has been one of Chicago’s most prominent riverfront landmarks since the 1920's when it was part of Montgomery Wards. It has a distinct statue of a 17 foot tall woman, called "Spirit of Progress". She holds the torch of knowledge while using her key to open the door to the future. Mr. Ward was a leading figure responsible for the preservation of the Chicago waterfront for the use of the public. Today, this building is a residential development along the River featuring 12-15 foot ceilings, 2 rooftop decks and exposed concrete columns throughout.
