Get to Know Uptown
Bordered by Irving Park Road, Foster Avenue, Clark Avenue, and Lake Michigan; Uptown is a large community that rubs up against Lakeview and Edgewater. It includes beautiful pocket neighborhoods such as Buena Park, Margate Park and Sheridan Park.
Uptown has a long history as an entertainment center. The long-gone Uptown Theater, and the still-thriving Aragon Ballroom once hosted great names like Frank Sinatra, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin.
What to do in Uptown
Right off the shores of Lake Michigan’s Foster Beach and Montrose Harbor, Uptown offers residents easy access to Lake Shore Drive and Lincoln Park, the stretch of parks and beaches along Lake Michigan. There are many opportunities for biking, volleyball, fishing and boating. There is even a sled hill for wintertime enthusiasts.
Uptown is home of the Green Mill, once a speakeasy of the infamous Al Capone. The Green Mill is a world-class destination for jazz musicians and enthusiasts. It’s just around the corner from the Aragon Ballroom and the Riviera Nightclub, two of the more popular mid-sized entertainment venues in Chicago.
Like many areas of Chicago, Uptown began to decline after World War II and many of its affluent residents fled to the suburbs. Revitalization efforts have paid off in that Uptown has big-name bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques, with more coming soon.

Uptown’s Distinctive Housing
Many of the spacious mansions and apartment buildings from the 1900s were converted into rooming houses to provide more affordable housing. However, over the last 20 years, these architectural gems have been renovated and restored by individuals and developers intent on salvaging the heritage of this lakefront neighborhood. While it is growing in popularity, there are still many opportunities to find affordable renovated and renovation-ready properties in Uptown.

Immediately north of Lakeview and bounded by Lake Michigan and north Lincoln Park on the east, are three historic neighborhoods. Since the 1970s, vintage apartment buildings and single-family mansions have been renovated and restored by individuals and developers intent on salvaging the architectural heritage of these lakefront neighborhoods.

Margate Park, in the northeast corner, consists of tree-lined streets with vintage condominiums and single-family mansions dating from the early 1900s. Lining North Marine Drive and facing the lakefront park is a row of high-rise condominiums and apartment buildings from the 1950s and 1960s.

Buena Park, in the southeast corner, offers large renovated condominiums and apartments, plus a major landmark district of turn-of-the-century Georgian and Prairie School mansions. Sheridan Park, to the west, also enjoys historic landmark designation and includes hundreds of renovated condominiums and apartments, in addition to large single-family homes on oversized lots.

Farthest east is West Graceland, a pocket of lovely brick and frame single-family homes on large lots.
